Navigation Skills

We provide Navigation Training to three levels.   Our basic course covers essential map reading skills aimed at walking in a rural environment.   At the intermediate level we prepare you for walking in more open country where the use of a compass is essential along with other key techniques.   At our highest level we will prepare you for adventures into featureless areas where there is more reliance on reading the contours on the map and relating them to the terrain.  We can also organise bespoke training for individuals and groups.  We are experienced in training both adults and children.  For more details click on the buttons below.

Basic Navigation

What is covered

We start with the components of a map.  We look at scales and symbols to enable you to relate this to the ground you are walking on.  You will learn how to orientate the map and use identifiable features to cross the landscape in simple navigation exercises.  Navigation techniques such as the use of handrails and pacing will be covered. By the end of this course you should be comfortable walking through a rural area using a map as your guide.

How it is covered

The course is very practical with minimum time spent indoors. For basic navigation we will spend a maximum of 2 hours indoors whilst we cover the basics and then it will be outdoors, as we think the best way to learn, is to do it.  The basic course consists of 6 hours tuition and we can follow this up with a second 6 hour session to reinforce the learning.  Where possible we will conduct the training in an area local to you.

Costs

To ensure that you get the most from your training session we we have a maximum of  6 people per instructor. The cost of our basic 6hr course is £80 per person with a minimum of 2 people needed for the course to run.  If you wish to follow this up with a second 6 hr consolidation, the cost of the 2 sessions is £130 per person.   Depending on your location there may be a requirement for reasonable instructor expenses to be covered.  We can also accommodate larger groups such as ramblers for navigation training.   Please contact us directly for costs if you are interested in group training.

Intermediate Navigation

What is covered

We quickly refresh the skills gained in the basic navigation course before moving to the use of  compass.  The construction of a compass is covered and we then show you how to take bearings from a map to find a course to walk on and also how to translate bearing on the land back to the map.   With these skills understood, we will then learn how to walk on a bearing to find our objective.   We will also cover how best to move to your objective introducing strategies such as attack points and aiming off.  By the end of this course you should be confident to walk in areas where there are no distinct paths.

How it is covered

The course is a completely practical course that will be undertaken in an area of open access ground.   Where possible we will try to find suitable training areas close to your location where possible.  The intermediate course consists of 6 hours tuition and we can follow this up with a second 6 hour session to reinforce the learning.

Costs

To ensure that you get the most from your training session we we have a maximum of  4 people per instructor. The cost of our intermediate 6hr course is £100 per person with a minimum of 2 people needed for the course to run.  If you wish to follow this up with a second 6 hr consolidation, the cost of the 2 sessions is £150 per person.   Depending on your location there may be a requirement for reasonable instructor expenses to be covered.  We can also accommodate larger groups such as ramblers for navigation training.   Please contact us directly for costs if you are interested in group training.

Advanced Navigation

What is covered

This course revisits the skills learnt in the intermediate course but moves them to a more challenging environment.   There is a focus on completing safe navigation in poor conditions, developing skills in the translating of contours on a map to to the landscape being walked in.  It will also cover the selection of safe routes in a mountainous environment and how to relocate your self when unsure of your position.

How it is covered

The course will be conducted in an upland part of the UK to provide a realistic training experience.  The course will be conducted over a period of 2 days with a total of 10 to 14 hours training time.   To provide the best opportunity there may be some training done in darkness if the daytime has given an opportunity to test poor visibility navigation.

Costs

To ensure that you get the most from your training session we we have a maximum of 4 people per instructor. The cost per person will be £180 per person with a minimum of 2 people needed for the course to run.  We can also accommodate larger groups such as ramblers for navigation training.   Please contact us directly for costs if you are interested in group training.
